James Ford

James Ford (1721 - 1781) had a background as teacher, painter, illustrator and carpenter. He produced gravestones dated 1767 - 1776 in Salem. Most are located in the Salem area but the literature indicates some were as far away as Truro.

He carved winged skulls and winged heads. The winged skulls often are indented with oval eyes and prominent teeth. Wavy lines are used for eyebrows. Most of his inscriptions start with "Here Lyes the Body". A distinctive sroll border is used.

The following Truro gravestone fit the time period and style of James Ford.

Joshua Dyer (1774) - Truro Cem.
Apphiah Gross (1774) - Truro Cem.
