Several grave markers have been found, excavated, reset and identified from 2004 to 2007. They add to the history of Cove Burying Ground. All are documented including photographs on this web site. The discoveries are listed in chronological order by year of death.
Capt. Jonathan Sparrow (1706/7) - broken slate footstone
Present in 1976 survey but gone by 2000 survey.
Mercy Freeman (before 1713) - initials inscribed on fieldstone
New discovery. This stone previously was attributed incorrectly to Barnabas Freeman (1736).
Mary Hedge (1714) - broken slate footstone
Present in 1905 survey but gone in all later surveys.
Benjamin Paine (1716) - fieldstone with no visible inscription
New discovery. Found in Paine plot near his mother Bennet (1716) and brother Benjamin (1713). Another stone belonging to Barnabas Freeman (1736) previously was attributed incorrectly to Benjamin Paine (1716).
Daniel Cole (1736) - broken slate footstone
Present in 1976 survey but gone by 2000 survey.
Rev. Benjamin Webb (1746) - broken slate headstone
Present in 1875 survey but gone in all later surveys.
Jabez Snow (1750) - broken slate headstone
Present in 1875 survey but gone in all later surveys.
Hannah Remick (1751) - broken slate headstone
Present in 1875 survey but gone in all later surveys.
Doane plot - two fieldstone grave markers with no inscriptions
New discoveries.
Mulford plot - three fieldstone grave markers with no inscriptions
New discoveries.
Eight scattered fieldstones with no inscriptions which are probable grave markers.
