HER LIES THE BODY
OF GEORGE BROWN
OF EASTHAM
DEC'D Ye 18th OF
JANUARY 173?
IN THE 51st YEAR
OF HIS AGE

footstone
no inscription

The sandstone gravestone displays a winged skull. Severe surface erosion obscures the inscription and carved image. The 1905 survey of Cove reported that George Brown died January 18, 175? in his 51st year and that the surface of his gravestone was worn. This inscription information was included in the 1976 survey as the gravestone was unreadable in 1976. Genealogical records indicate that George Brown was born about 1685 and died before 1738 rather than in the 1750's. This is consistent with a year of death of about 1735. It is a common error on old stones to read "3" as "5".
