The headstone displays a winged skull carved in the style of Nathaniel Emmes of Boston. The top right photo shows the headstone with the footstone in the background. The footstone in the bottom right photo displays a lightly carved winged head. It is unusual to have a winged skull headstone paired with a winged head footstone.

Researchers indicate that Samuel was married to Mercy (Southworth) Freeman 1712 who has a fieldstone grave marker next to Samuel. They had nine children including Samuel Freeman 1742 and Mercy (Freeman) Cole 1735 who both have gravestones in Cove. It is reported that the parents of Samuel were Samuel Freeman who died in the 1640's and Apphia (Quicke) Freeman who died about 1668.
