Rebecca Howes 1765

headstone tympanum

Here Lies the Body of
Mrs REBECCA HOWES
wife of Mr THOMAS HOWES
who Died Decem'r the 10th
1765 in the 56th Year
of her Age

This fierce skull has no lower jaw. The large crossed bones add to the scary effect. A crack is carved in the skull. The tympanum is nicely indented. See Elizabeth Sears (1764) - Chatham for another dramatic skull without wings. The Chatham Historical Society has received expert opinion that the Howes and Sears gravestones are carved in the style of Robert Fowle of Boston.
