headstone

CHARLES H. LYMAN
died
May 20, 1863
AEt. 25 Y'rs. 11 M's.

Toll the bell solmnly
Over our dead
Slowly comes home the brave
Seeking his quiet grave
In it most tenderly
Let him be laid.
O. N. L.

This gravestone was found April 2006 during step reconstruction at Trees's Place Art Gallery in Orleans. The stone had been placed carved side down and used as a step. The epitaph suggests Charles Lyman was a Civil War casualty. The stone displays the initials O. N. L. for Oliver N. Linnell (1816 - 1892) who had a stone carving shop in Orleans.

A survey done in the mid 1900's shows that Charles H Lyman has a grave marker in Chatham Seaside Cemetery. The survey information is consistent with but different than the information on the gravestone. The survey says only 1863, age 26, son of S. Lee & Lydia H. Lyman. This suggests the survey information may be from a Lyman monument. While it may be that the headstone from Tree's Place is a carver's reject, it is reasonable to think the headstone was stolen from Seaside Cemetery.

A headstone for Almira Harding (d1850) was found at the same time in the Tree's Place steps. A mid 1900's survey shows her listed on a Harding monument in Orleans Cemetery. The monument information is consistent with but different than her headstone information. This suggests that her headstone was stolen from Orleans Cemetery.
