A transitional image from the mid 1700's when the winged skull evolved into a winged head with no teeth showing. Note the mouth has a rare bird shape. Some gravestones of this type have a mouth shaped like a heart. These symbols suggest the soul escaping through the mouth. Wings generally are abstract. Nathaniel Fuller of Plymouth was a major supplier of these gravestones.
